What is the IATI Virtual Community Exchange?

This ‘Virtual Community Exchange’ is the first of two online meetings to be held in the lead-up to the pilot ‘IATI Community Event’ which was delayed from 2020 due to COVID-19, and is now to be held in late 2021. These two ‘Virtual Community Exchanges’ will be informal, interactive, and community-driven, focusing on engaging with the wider IATI community and providing opportunities for shared learning based on practical experiences in engaging with IATI data.

The goals of this first virtual exchange are to:

  • Present recent and upcoming activities undertaken by IATI to and engage with members of the community after a long period without a face-to-face event, communicating where IATI stands as an initiative and how community members can help us to reach our collective goals as set out in the 2020-2025 IATI Strategic Plan;

  • Showcase preliminary results from IATI’s new Communities of Practice and its digital platform, IATI Connect;

  • Foster peer learning amongst the community on different facets of engaging with IATI data; encourage sharing and showcasing of work by IATI community members; and allow for virtual networking.

Who can attend the Virtual Community Exchange? How can I register?

The Virtual Community Exchange is open to anyone with an interest in transparency, open data or IATI generally. We expect participation from a broad range of stakeholders, including from governments, civil society, the private sector, academia and others, from across the globe. The event will be organised over a half day of diverse sessions. There is no expectation that participants would attend all sessions, but can ‘pick and choose’ based on their interests and needs. Simultaneous interpretation between English, French and Spanish will be provided.

Where will the Virtual Community Exchange be held?

The Virtual Community Exchange will be held virtually on Zoom. Links to individual sessions will be circulated along with an agenda in March.

What will the Virtual Community Exchange agenda cover? How can I contribute?

The agenda will be further shaped with input from the IATI community leading up to the event, and shared in March. However, types of sessions are outlined below:

  • Community of Practice (COP) Sessions: With the support of the IATI Connect Manager (Secretariat), the content for these COP sessions will be determined by members of the COP themselves in the lead-up to the event. Find more information on this process in IATI Connect.
  • ‘Meeting the Ambitions of the Strategic Plan’ Sessions: How is IATI moving forward to meet its ambitions as laid out in the Strategic Plan? What are key successes and challenges that remain? What are new tools, processes, or support available to the community? These sessions will also allow for conversations amongst the IATI community on how they can support achievement of Strategic Plan goals. 
  • Community-Led Sessions: Sessions run by community members, where the community can spark discussion, discuss successes or failures, or present their work. 
  • IATI Secretariat-Led Sessions: These sessions will range from ‘IATI 101’ sessions to IATI Connect training and brainstorming around future guidance materials. Further information will be provided in due course. 

How can I submit a proposal to host a Community Session?

Brief session proposals can be submitted by any member of the IATI community before 19 February using this link ( Please note that you do not need to be an IATI member to submit a proposal. 

When submitting your proposal, please keep the following in mind:

  • We encourage joint applications across organisations / constituencies as we aim for sessions that support cross-fertilisation of ideas across communities and allow us to include a diversity of stakeholders and viewpoints;
  • Each session should aim to be interactive, engaging and inspiring;
  • The session should have a clear link to IATI’s mission and / or Strategic Plan goals;
  • We are interested in hearing about innovative and ambitious ideas and endeavours;
  • Each session will be allotted one hour and ENG-FR-ESP simultaneous interpretation will be provided;
  • The deadline for submitting your proposal is 19 February, after which the Community Event Working Group, mandated by the IATI Governing Board, will examine all submissions and reach out to applicants by the end of February.
